Where to stay

Where to stay in Ilha Grande: Abraão or a quiet beach?

The island has one real village and dozens of beaches you can only reach by boat or on foot. Where you sleep decides how you spend your days, so here is how the areas compare.

For a first visit, stay in Vila do Abraão. It is where the boats from the mainland arrive, and it has almost all of the island's restaurants, shops, boat tours and trailheads. Choose a quieter beach such as Abraãozinho, Palmas, Saco do Céu, Araçatiba or Aventureiro only if you want isolation and can live with boat-dependent logistics.

That is the short version. The longer one depends on how many nights you have, how much walking you are happy to do with a bag, and whether you want dinner options or silence after dark.

Why do most visitors stay in Vila do Abraão?

Because everything starts there. The public ferries from Angra dos Reis and Mangaratiba, the speedboats from Conceição de Jacareí and the door-to-door transfers from Rio all land at the same pier in Abraão. The village holds the island's widest choice of beds, from hostels to sea-view pousadas, plus restaurants, a few small supermarkets, the agencies that sell boat tours and the start of the main trails to Lopes Mendes, Dois Rios and Pico do Papagaio.

There are no cars on the island, so Abraão is a place of sandy lanes and cobbled paths. That is the charm, and it is also the main practical point: you will walk from the pier to your room with your luggage, so where you sleep inside the village matters more than you might expect.

Which quieter beaches can you stay on?

Outside Abraão, Ilha Grande has small communities and isolated guesthouses spread around the coast. None of them has the services of the village, and most are reached by boat. This is how they compare.

AreaHow you get thereWhat you findBest for
Abraãozinho30 to 40 min coastal path from Abraão, or a taxi boatA few guesthouses, a beach that empties in the late afternoonCouples who want quiet nights with the village in reach
Palmas and PousoOn the trail to Lopes Mendes, or by boat from Abraão to PousoVery simple guesthouses and campsites; Palmas has around 70 residentsBackpackers, early mornings at Lopes Mendes
Saco do CéuBoat from Abraão, or a 5.8 km trail from the aqueductA sheltered bay with mangroves and a handful of pousadasTotal calm, flat water, starry nights
AraçatibaBoats from Angra dos Reis (not from Conceição de Jacareí)The island's second-largest community; few shops, most pousadas have their own restaurantDivers and slow stays
Praia Vermelha and ProvetáBoats from Angra dos ReisSmall villages; Praia Vermelha has just over 100 residentsDivers, people who want local village life
AventureiroBoat, or a hard 3.5 km trail from ProvetáA protected beach with capped visitor numbers, campsites and a few simple guesthousesSurfers and campers who do not mind a rough landing

One thing to know before booking a remote beach: boats from Conceição de Jacareí and Mangaratiba only go to Abraão. If you travel from Rio by transfer or speedboat, you reach Abraão first and then need a taxi boat or a local boat onward. Agree the price before you board, and ask your guesthouse for the timing of the last boat of the day.

How much does accommodation cost in 2026?

Prices on Ilha Grande follow the calendar more than the room. These ranges come from rates published for 2026 in Vila do Abraão, for low and mid season. Expect higher prices on summer weekends and in July, and much higher ones at New Year and Carnival, when many places also impose minimum stays.

TypeTypical price per night (2026)Notes
Hostel dorm bedAbout R$60 to R$150 per personCheapest on weekdays out of season
Simple pousada, double roomR$200 to R$450Breakfast usually included
Mid-range or sea-view pousadaR$450 to R$700Book early for weekends
Boutique or waterfront guesthouseR$700 and upOften outside the center or on another beach

On the quieter beaches, your pousada is often the only place to eat in the evening, so ask whether dinner is offered and what it costs. For a full picture of daily spending, see our guide to what a trip to Ilha Grande costs in 2026.

What should you check before you book?

Six questions to ask the pousada

  1. How many minutes on foot from the pier, and is it uphill? This matters more than any photo when you arrive with luggage.
  2. Air conditioning or a fan? From December to March, nights are hot and humid.
  3. Card or cash? Card machines go down when the connection drops, and ATMs on the island are unreliable. Bring cash from Rio either way.
  4. Is there a minimum stay? Common on weekends, and almost universal at New Year and Carnival.
  5. For remote beaches: how do I get there, and when is the last boat? Some places arrange the boat for you.
  6. Where can I eat in the evening? Outside Abraão, the answer is often "here, or nowhere".

Which area fits your trip?

First visit, two to four nights: Vila do Abraão, in the center if you want to be close to everything, at either end of the beach if you want to sleep well.

Families with children: Abraão, close to the pier and to the beach, so nobody has to climb a hill after a long day. The village is flat along the waterfront.

Couples looking for quiet: the Abraãozinho side, or a pousada in a calm bay like Saco do Céu if you are happy to stay put.

Hikers: Abraão, since the main trails start there. If Lopes Mendes is your priority, a night in Palmas or Pouso gets you on the sand before the day boats arrive. Our Lopes Mendes guide explains both routes.

Divers: Araçatiba or Praia Vermelha, reached by boat from Angra dos Reis.

Surfers and campers: Aventureiro, if the sea lets the boat land.

How do you get to your accommodation from Rio?

Whatever area you choose, the trip starts the same way: road from Rio to the coast, then a boat to Vila do Abraão. Our shared transfer picks you up at your hotel, Airbnb or apartment in Rio (or at GIG and SDU airports, or the Novo Rio bus station) and takes you by air-conditioned van to Conceição de Jacareí, then by speedboat to Abraão. It takes about 3h30 door to door and costs R$260 one way or R$490 round trip per person, with port fees included. The Sustainable Tourism Tax charged by Angra dos Reis is not included and is paid separately.

For the way back, transfers leave Abraão at 09:00, 13:30 and 17:00, so you can plan your check-out around them. If you are heading to Araçatiba or Provetá instead, look at the ferries and boats from Angra dos Reis in our Ilha Grande ferry guide. Frequently asked questions

Is it better to stay in Vila do Abraão or on another beach?

For a first visit, Vila do Abraão. Every boat from the mainland arrives there, and it has nearly all the restaurants, shops, boat tours and trailheads. Another beach makes sense if you want quiet evenings and accept that every outing depends on a boat or a long walk.

How many nights should I book in Ilha Grande?

Three or four nights suit most first visits: enough for Lopes Mendes, a boat tour and one good hike without rushing. With two nights you will see one or two highlights; with five or more you can add remote beaches like Aventureiro.

Can I find a room without booking ahead?

Outside the busy periods, usually yes, especially on weekdays. Book well ahead for December to February, July, New Year and Carnival, when many pousadas also require minimum stays.

How do I get my luggage to my pousada?

You carry it. There are no cars in Vila do Abraão, so you walk from the pier with your bags. Pick a place close to the pier or pack light; our transfer includes one small or medium suitcase and one backpack per person.

Can you camp on Ilha Grande?

Yes, in campsites. There are campsites in and around Vila do Abraão and in smaller communities such as Palmas and Aventureiro. Camping elsewhere inside the state park is not allowed.
