Plenty of travelers ask whether they can see Ilha Grande and sleep in Rio the same night. Technically, yes. Here is why we advise against it, and what a single night changes.
A day trip from Rio to Ilha Grande is technically possible, but we do not recommend it. The journey takes about 3h30 each way, so you spend around 7 hours travelling for roughly 6 to 8 hours on the island, with no margin if the sea or traffic delays you. Stay at least one night, ideally two.
We understand the temptation. Many visitors have a week in Rio, and Ilha Grande competes with Sugarloaf, the beaches and everything else. But the island rewards people who stay, and punishes tight schedules. Here is the honest arithmetic.
Because the island is not close enough for it. The road from Rio to the pier at Conceição de Jacareí takes about 3 hours, then there is the boat crossing. Our earliest shared pickups run from 05:00 in Barra da Tijuca, 05:15 in Leblon and Ipanema and 05:30 in Copacabana, to 07:00 at Galeão airport. That puts you in Vila do Abraão in the middle of the morning.
On the way back, the last shared transfer leaves Abraão at 17:00 and reaches Rio around 20:30, later if traffic into the city is heavy. In between, every activity has to end in time for that boat. A boat tour that runs late, a slow return from a beach or a crossing delayed for safety can turn the day into a race.
| Time (example from Copacabana) | What happens |
|---|---|
| 05:30 to 05:45 | Pickup, after an alarm around 04:45 |
| Around 09:00 | Arrival in Vila do Abraão after the van and the crossing |
| 09:00 to 16:30 | About 7 hours on the island, watching the clock |
| 17:00 | Last shared transfer leaves Vila do Abraão |
| Around 20:30 | Back in Copacabana, depending on traffic |
One thing, realistically. The boat to Praia do Pouso and the short trail to Lopes Mendes fit only if the return boat brings you back to Abraão well before 17:00. A short Lagoa Azul trip can fit; the classic half-island boat tour, which lasts about 6 hours, usually does not. The long hikes are out: Pico do Papagaio starts before dawn and Dois Rios means about 6 hours of walking.
What you lose is harder to put in a table. The best hours on Ilha Grande are the early morning, when the beaches are empty before the day boats arrive, and the evening in Vila do Abraão, when the day visitors have left and the village slows down. A same-day return misses both.
| Same-day return | One night | Two nights | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time on the island | 6 to 8 hours | About 24 to 30 hours | About 2 days |
| What fits | One beach or a short boat trip | Village evening + Lopes Mendes or a boat tour | Lopes Mendes, a boat tour and a hike |
| Margin for weather | None | Some | Comfortable |
| Pace | Rushed | Relaxed | Unhurried |
With one night, you arrive mid-morning, spend the afternoon on a nearby beach, have dinner in the village and take an early boat the next morning before returning on the 13:30 or 17:00 transfer. With two nights, you have a whole day free and can move plans around if the sea is rough. Our 3-day itinerary shows how to use them, and the guide on where to stay in Ilha Grande helps you pick a base.
Less than you might think. Our round trip transfer costs the same R$490 per person whatever the dates, so staying over adds only the room and meals. A dorm bed in Vila do Abraão costs about R$60 to R$150 a night in 2026, a double room in a simple pousada R$200 to R$450.
The tourist tax can even work in favor of staying. Under the rules reported in June 2026, most visitors pay R$50, valid for 30 days, while visitors who board in another municipality and cannot show a two-night stay pay R$100. Conceição de Jacareí, where our boats leave, is in Mangaratiba. The amounts have changed several times since the tax was introduced, so check the city's Viva Angra system before you travel. Our trip cost guide has the full breakdown.
Agencies in Rio sell all-inclusive Ilha Grande day tours. They typically last around 12 hours and combine a bus to the coast with a schooner trip around the islands of the bay, lunch included. They solve the logistics, but not the clock: most of the day is spent on the bus and the boat, with little or no time to walk around the island on your own. Read the itinerary carefully, as some barely stop on Ilha Grande itself. If one day truly is all you have, keep expectations modest and pick a calm, sunny weekday.
If Ilha Grande is on your list, give it at least one night, and two if you can. You will see more, travel less tired and have room for the weather, which decides more on this island than any timetable. Book a round trip with your return date a day or two later; if plans change, the return date can be moved up to 24 hours before departure. Can you do Ilha Grande as a day trip from Rio?
Technically yes, but we do not recommend it. The journey takes about 3h30 each way, so you spend around 7 hours travelling for roughly 6 to 8 hours on the island, with no margin if the sea or traffic delays you. Stay at least one night, ideally two.
How many hours would I have on the island in a day?
At best 6 to 8 hours, depending on where you are picked up in Rio. Early pickups run from 05:00 to 07:15, the trip takes about 3h30, and the last shared transfer back leaves Vila do Abraão at 17:00.
Is one night on Ilha Grande enough?
One night is the minimum that makes the trip worthwhile: an afternoon and evening in Vila do Abraão, then a full morning for Lopes Mendes or a boat trip before heading back. Two nights give you a whole day on the island and room for the weather.
Are packaged day tours from Rio to Ilha Grande worth it?
They are simple and often cheaper, but most of the day is spent on a bus and a schooner, usually around 12 hours in total, with little or no time to explore the island on foot. If your schedule allows, a night on the island is a better use of the same money.
Do day visitors pay the Ilha Grande tourist tax?
Yes. Angra dos Reis charges a Sustainable Tourism Tax that is not included in transfer prices. Under the rules reported in June 2026, it ranges from R$28 to R$100 depending on where you board and how long you stay, and visitors who board outside Angra without a two-night stay fall in the R$100 bracket. Check the city's Viva Angra system before you travel.
Book a round trip and choose your return date; you can change it up to 24 hours before departure. Van, port fees and boat included.
