Most people who go come back happy, but not everyone. Here is what the island does well, what it does badly and who should probably spend those days somewhere else.
Yes, Ilha Grande is worth it for most travelers who like nature: car-free villages, Atlantic Forest trails and beaches like Lopes Mendes, about 3h30 from Rio. It is not worth it if you want resort comfort, nightlife every night or a guaranteed sunny beach in the rainy season, or if you can only spare a few hours.
That is the honest version. The rest of this page explains why, so you can decide whether it fits your trip, your pace and your dates.
There are no cars. This changes everything about the place. You arrive by boat, walk from the pier to your room, and get around on foot or by boat. Evenings in Vila do Abraão are lively in season but never noisy with traffic, and the rest of the island is quieter still.
The nature is the real thing. Much of the island is covered by Atlantic Forest protected by a state park, with around 100 beaches (106 is the figure usually quoted) and some 150 km of trails. Lopes Mendes, on the ocean side, is regularly named among Brazil's most beautiful beaches. In 2019, UNESCO listed Paraty and Ilha Grande together as a World Heritage site for their culture and biodiversity.
It has a story. The island was a quarantine station and then a prison until 1994, which kept development away for decades. You can still see the ruins of the Lazareto near Abraão and walk to the old prison site at Dois Rios. In 2026, it was also ranked 13th in Enjoy Travel's list of the world's 50 best islands; our article on Ilha Grande among the world's best islands explains the ranking.
It is close to Rio. About 3h30 door to door, by road to the coast and a short boat crossing. That is far enough to feel like a different world and close enough for a few days in the middle of a Rio trip.
| Likely to love it | Might be disappointed |
|---|---|
| Hikers and walkers | Travelers looking for a resort with a pool and room service |
| Beach lovers who do not need beach clubs | People who want big nightlife every night of the week |
| Couples and friends after a slower pace | Anyone who cannot walk much or carry their luggage |
| Families with children old enough to walk the trails | Travelers with only a few hours to spare |
| Backpackers and campers | Those who need guaranteed sunshine in January and February |
One day is possible on paper, but it means about 7 hours on the road for 6 to 8 hours on the island, with no margin for delays. Our guide to the Ilha Grande day trip from Rio explains why we recommend staying at least one night.
Two nights is the minimum to enjoy the place: an afternoon in the village, a full day at Lopes Mendes or on a boat, and a morning before heading back.
Three or four nights is ideal for a first visit, with time for Lopes Mendes, a boat tour and a hike such as Dois Rios or Pico do Papagaio, plus a spare morning in case the weather turns.
Five days or more let you reach remote beaches like Aventureiro, stay in a quieter bay or walk part of the island loop.
They are not competing for the same trip. Ilha Grande is an island of forest, trails and beaches without cars. Paraty, its neighbor on the Costa Verde and part of the same UNESCO listing, is a colonial town of cobbled streets, restaurants and boat trips around its bay. They are about two hours apart by road, and many travelers spend a few days in each. Our Ilha Grande or Paraty comparison goes into detail.
Count roughly R$300 to R$550 per person per day for a mid-range stay sharing a double room, or R$150 to R$300 on a backpacker budget, plus the trip from Rio. Our door-to-door transfer costs R$260 one way or R$490 round trip per person, with port fees included; the tourist tax is extra. The full breakdown is in our guide to what a trip to Ilha Grande costs.
In May and June, then September and October: drier trails, calmer seas, fewer people and lower prices than in summer. December to February is livelier and hotter, with more rain and more crowds; July is dry but busy with school holidays. Our best time to visit guide covers each season.
If the idea of a few days without cars, with a forest trail in the morning and a quiet beach in the afternoon, sounds like a holiday rather than an inconvenience, go. Give it at least two nights, avoid New Year and Carnival if you want calm, and pack light. If you need a resort, a nightclub or certainty about the weather, you will probably be happier elsewhere, and that is fine too.
If you are going, the easiest way in is a single booking from Rio: pickup at your hotel, airport or the Novo Rio bus station, air-conditioned van to Conceição de Jacareí and speedboat to Vila do Abraão, with free cancellation up to 48 hours before departure. Is Ilha Grande worth visiting?
Yes, if you like nature: it combines car-free villages, Atlantic Forest trails and beaches like Lopes Mendes, about 3h30 from Rio. It is less worth it if you want resort comfort, nightlife every night or guaranteed sun in the rainy season, or if you only have a few hours.
Is Ilha Grande better than Paraty?
Neither is better; they are different. Ilha Grande is about nature, trails and beaches with no cars. Paraty is a colonial town with cobbled streets, restaurants and boat trips in its bay. They are about two hours apart by road, and many travelers combine both.
How many days do you need in Ilha Grande?
Three or four nights for a first visit: enough for Lopes Mendes, a boat tour and a hike without rushing. A same-day return from Rio is possible but rushed, so we recommend at least one night; five days or more let you reach remote beaches.
Is Ilha Grande safe for tourists?
It is generally regarded as a calm place to visit, with no cars and a small community. Use normal precautions with valuables on the beach. The main risks are natural: slippery trails, currents on ocean-facing beaches and being caught on a trail after dark.
Is Ilha Grande worth it in the rainy season?
Often, yes. From December to March, storms are usually short and come in the late afternoon, leaving sunny mornings. Rough seas can delay boats, so keep a buffer day before a flight. If your dates are flexible, May, June, September and October are more reliable.
One booking covers your pickup in Rio, the van to the coast and the speedboat to Vila do Abraão. Free cancellation up to 48 hours before departure.
